Zaira Paredon

1. What inspired you to take salsa lessons here in Los Angeles?

I used to always go to the promenade in Santa Monica on Sundays where they would have people salsa dancing. I absolutely loved watching them, it was always something I dreamt of learning. It was my New Year’s resolution for several years as well.

2. When you've felt like you couldn't keep up with the pace of a salsa class, what steps did you take to catch up and feel more comfortable?

There are some people for whom dancing comes naturally; it's easy for them to watch the instructor and then repeat the moves. I feel it takes me longer and several attempts to get it down.

With Movers and Shakers, the Friday practice has helped tremendously. Even if I don't feel like I got the movement down during class, I am able to practice on Fridays with other classmates and also get help from the instructor.

3. What's the most hilarious or embarrassing moment you've experienced on the salsa dance floor or in class?

Thankfully nothing too embarrassing, but during Friday practice when I dance with Movers from a higher level, I am a wreck and probably embarrassing to watch. But I take Danny's (Academy Director) advice and just smile through it and do the best I can.

4. In what ways has dancing salsa improved your life in general?

Salsa dancing is something that takes you out of your comfort zone. Doing stuff like this is so important, and it's also so cool to meet people who are also trying to do the same.

Learning new moves every week is so fulfilling, and I’ve really enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t wait to continue to learn and grow as a dancer.

5. How would you describe the atmosphere and community at Movers and Shakers Dance Academy?

Amazing. I was so overwhelmed with how friendly and supportive everyone has been. Such a great community, so diverse, yet I’ve met so many like-minded people.
