Hey everyone, I know that not everyone here is responsible for writing text for the website, but occasionally, I think it does come up for a lot of team members.
So I feel this will be relevant for maybe everyone.
I was listening to a business guru on YouTube, and he talked about a study from a presidential election in the United States many years ago.
The study basically said that the lower level English that the candidate used, the better the response was.
When Donald Trump was first running for office in 2016, a lot of people would make fun of him for speaking like a third grader, like really low-level English.
But the reality is whether a person liked him or hated him, the reality was that that kind of language was effective because it was very easy for people to understand. And I guess there are studies that now back this up.
So his point was that when we communicate to customers, we want to really communicate at the lowest reading level possible.
Even he said a 3rd-grade level does better than a 5th-grade level.
So short sentences, simple, simple, simple. You know, it's the same concept as Apple with design—they have a minimalist design.
I would call this like minimalist language.
When I write copy, I'm always asking myself, "how can I make it shorter and simpler?".
"What are more words that I can remove?"
So again, I know that you're not all responsible for that, but I just want to share this piece of information.
And Claire, maybe we can include this in an SOP somewhere—I think that could be helpful.
